Three life-giving posts I've seen on the Internet recently.

So many articles and posts and news stories about the most disheartening, sad things.
Sometimes even the responses: beautifully-written reflections, or calls for action,
reflecting truth and justice,
leave me just feeling more overwhelmed by how much bad there is.

(Rock on to those who feel called to seek good through writing them! But:)

My little blog isn't going to say anything new or helpful about those sad things.

Yet leaving lament unsaid feels wrong, too.

As a form of lament, for me, I'm keeping a list of when the Internet shows me something that resonates with me as truly good.
Things I think have comparable
power and poignancy in their goodness

as is found in the stories of cruelty and suffering.

The good stories don't negate the bad ones.
They just exist, also.

For now:
I hope my actions in my daily life grow in mercy-love and justice-doing.

On the social media/Internet front:

Here are
three things I saw online that I found truly, deeply, resonantly good.

(1)

Like a real one. Like maybe IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS.
Like, finding out your kid has cancer could be a bummer, going to need a few weeks of treatment and then they are FINE. Like a cold.
Can you imagine?!

A trial was completed this year with 22 children who all had cancer which was progressing despite every common form of treatment. Like kids whose parents were told "there's nothing more we can do."
AND TWENTY OF THEM ARE NOW FINE.

How amazing is that?!!!

(2)

The physicist who came up with cosmological inflation theory was proven right;
a worker on the team who finalized the discovery showed up on his doorstep to tell him.

I just LOVE this video (here's another article about it).
I love the expressions on Andrei Linde and his wife's face- I love how the shocks sinks in for her first and she spontaneously gives the guy telling them a hug, while Andrei is still going "What? What? What did you say?!". I love that he found out without any warning that his life's work had been successful. I love imagining how that must have felt. I love that the team member had the idea to go show up and randomly tell him as soon as they found out. I just love it.

Also, the little bit I could comprehend about the theory itself is amazing.
"[Andrei Linde] proposed that our universe is one of a vast – and perhaps infinite – number of inflationary universes that sprout off an eternal cosmic tree, without beginning and without end..."

Um. What. That just....
is so insanely big.
That makes me worship God so much.

(3)

"..Aaliyah Taylor, a 17-year-old senior at Ballou High School, walked up to the officer
and started playing “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae)” on her phone.
Then she did the Nae Nae dance..
.
The officer, according to Taylor, laughed
and said she had far better dance moves than that."

"...For Taylor, she said the dance-off marked her first positive interaction with police officers in her neighborhood.

She has six sisters and one brother and, according to Taylor, all have been arrested or detained for non-violent offenses like breaking curfew.

Taylor, who said she’s never been arrested, recalls her siblings saying that the officers acted unnecessarily rude and rough during their arrests.

Those experiences, Taylor said, had shaped her perception of police officers.

“I thought all cops were cruel because that’s how I saw them,” Taylor said.
“I’ve now seen there are good cops out there.”
In a different article, Aaliyah Taylor was quoted as saying:
“Instead of us fighting,
she tried to turn it around and make it something fun,”

The cop was reached but refused to be named because she didn't want to make the story about her;
her boss simply said she is someone "known as a hard worker and committed to policing."

Not only is this just, lovely and wonderful,
it also is a perfect example of one of my favorite attachment principles:
playfulness builds relational bonds AND lowers the stress hormones that impede learning.

There are some really good things happening.

I'm in love, I'm in love, and I don't care who knows it!!!

A semi-regular glance at this blog would suggest that it is about:
Jesus, poetry, family and friends, and reflections on a small, happy life.

It's not.

It's about what brings me joy.

And I wrestled with posting about this because I prefer to pretend
I only love everything above.

But:

I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH
BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.

The Sci-fi show that ran from 2004-2008.

I am so deeply enamored, on so many levels
that I've been alternately embarrassed/concerned.

IS THIS NORMAL?! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?!

First of all,

it's a TV show.

I like relaxing to Grey's or Bones on Netflix like the next girl,
but I've certainly never considered buying posters of my favorite shows' casts to hang in my house...
before now.

Second of all,

It's called BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.
HELLO.

THIRD of all...

I am IN LOVE. ENAMORED.
(I started to write "obsessed", but that gives the wrong image. I've been obsessed with unpleasant things before. This is a happy and joyful obsession.)

Like, I've journaled about it IN MY PRAYER JOURNAL twice in the last ten days.
I brought it up as an example in class.
...I have on more than occasion had to catch myself before I started talking about it in response to the question "What's new".
Weird. Pathetic?
Right?!

I was reassured, however, during one of my many recent google searches about the show's history (are you seeing this?!), to discover that this is apparently a common phenomenon.

All of my (normal, thoughtful, engaged-in-life) friends who've seen it immediately validated my experience.
"Oh, of course you're obsessed. That's what happens."
"We lost months of our life to that show. It was great."
"So have you reached the Battlestar-evangelist phase yet?"
(at which point I pulled out my phone and showed them the multiple texts I'd sent to multiple friends that day begging them to start watching it.)

THIS SHOW IS MAGIC.

I'm in love! I'm in love! And I don't care who knows it!

So.
My spring-in-small-town-Oregon life...

is filled with lit candles, rising bread dough made with home-grown herbs,
sewing projects and walks past vineyards and small children doing crafts upstairs and friends over for dinner.

And in my home, right next to the fresh flowers in a vase on the windowsill and the twinkly lights strung all over...

you very well may soon see a giant poster of the Battlestar cast, hung up with pride.

(Do you think I should tattoo one of Kara Thrace's quotes on my body somewhere? Oh gosh I just love her.)

Bolivia "teaser".

This is a two-minute preview video Tim put together from our Bolivia trip. It is absolutely beautiful. This is the house I did my six-month HNGR internship in. More video coming!!

I love all of it, but my favorites are the clips of their beautiful faces, starting at about 1:32.

In the meantime, Tim and Ash are starting to post Bolivia pics on their blog, so make sure to check in over there!!

Rape.

In the spring of 2010, an event was held at my school: Take Back the Night. Take Back the Night exists to raise awareness of sexual violence, to prevent it, and to decrease shame and isolation among survivors.

In my opinion, to work to remove shame and isolation is a holy calling. It is a picture of who God is, and it is His work. He makes broken things into beautiful. That is who He is.

At that point, I had been home about four months from my internship in Bolivia, where I had spent my days (and nights) hanging out in a group home with fifteen beautiful, hyper, joyful, crazy girls. Beautiful girls who had been hurt, objectified, made to serve others' evil whims, abused, raped. Adrienne, the president of the club organizing the event and a good friend, asked me if I would speak. I prepared and gave a short talk on a few themes of what I had learned: on our calling to watch out for those who are utterly unprotected; on redeeming physical touch.

An important part of the night is an open mike time, where people can step forward and share their stories. Of being hurt, of being objectified, made to serve others' evil whims, abused, raped. It is a safe space, and after each story is finished, together we all shout, "THAT'S NOT OKAY".

My clearest memory from that night, though, is not my talk, and it's not the open mike time. My clearest memory from that night is an upsetting one. It's not a bad memory, exactly. But it was jarringly painful to me when it happened and has been every time I've remembered it since- which, to be honest, has been often.

I walked away from campus after the program with one of my most beloved and respected friends. It had meant a lot to me that she had come, in the middle of the week in a busy semester; I knew it had been mostly because I was speaking and she wanted to support me.

We walked in the dark together, both silent. And then, after a few minutes, she told me that before that night she had not known that it is always not okay.

I do not have words to convey how much I love this girl, or how much I respect her. That day, and today, and every day in between. She has a heart which is more kind and humble than almost any I know. And, perhaps in large part because of my deep love and respect for her, I also cannot put into words how painful that statement was to hear.

The point of this isn't to share anger or shock or even pain. The take away from that interaction was that her information and therefore her opinion had changed. That is exactly the hope and the purpose of Take Back the Night. And, further proving my opinion of her, her life changed- immediately. As in, she went straight to her computer and wrote a letter to a friend conveying compassion.

I don't think I ever thought it was okay. But without Bolivia, would I know?

It is horrifying to me that there could ever, ever, ever be a question in our minds or a bit of indifference in our hearts about beautiful, beloved, image-of-God bodies and souls, and the protection they deserve.

I don't know everyone who reads this blog. I don't know your stories and I don't know if you think it might sometimes be a little bit okay. I don't know if you've ever had someone tell you that it was okay. It is not okay.

Removing shame and isolation is who He is.

(on prostitution.)

Family.

Wonder what your psychologist was like in grad school?

I've written before about my beautiful friend Chelsea, who is one of my favorite favorite people here. We hang out all the time and she is my coffee date buddy and walk-vent-need fulfiller of Newberg. Her husband Ryan and I were assigned to be therapy partners for each other this week and after our respective "sessions" we got slightly unprofessional...

Good psycholog-izing, right?
We love you, Chels!!

Pumpkin Muffins & A Dance Party: Fall Cousin Movie LOVE!!!

We baked pumpkin-chocolate-chip muffins Friday afternoon!

And then after dinner... we had a dance party to Mumford & Sons. Because, obvs.

I know... I don't know why I get this awesome of a life, either.

We also went on a walk to an insanely-decorated-for-Halloween house down the block and read books and cuddled.
I love fall. And family.

The woman above is Jodi... she is married to my cousin Andy, and I am so unbelievably thankful for that, I cannot even tell you.
To any men considering marriage, my word of request: if you have a little 12-year-old cousin who ten years down the road is going to move away from everyone she knows and need a new best friend- please consider picking a wife who will hang out with her all the time and be the sweetest listener and best coffee-date buddy ever. It's a really, really nice cousin move. Thanks Andy!!

(Andy never really gets represented on here bc usually he's at work when I'm hanging out with the fam. Here he is. Do you think we look alike? Our moms are sisters. I love him a lot.)

.tidings of great joy.

When Linus says "Fear not", he drops his security blanket.

The minute before I watched this, I was tossing around in bed thinking idly at Jesus (this would be what I like to refer to as "praying"). I was asking Him to be with one friend and his family, and I was sort of thinking at Him/with Him about my family, and it was all very personal and casual and great.
Then I watched this movie and thought about the insane majesty it taps into, of the glory of the Lord and unto you a Savior is born and a multitude of heavenly host praising God and the million insane, uncountable, independent stars in the distant galaxies.
And all of a sudden it occurred to me, that personal God I'm hanging out with IS the great majestic God who makes the stars and was born in a manger and is praised by a multitude of heavenly host. And it just boggles the mind.

Merry Christmas, friends.

Emmanuel.

This made me so happy. Definitely worth watching!

I've been pretty obsessed with Mary lately (meaning the mother of Jesus, in addition to being obessed with Mary my best friend and Mary my mentor! What a name.) A woman at our church recently prayed for me on a Sunday that I would have "the heart of Mary". I thought it sounded cool and then I thought about it. Yikes. She didn't exactly have an easy time of it. Scary prayer. But that said I hope it is one God will help me to keep praying... she is pretty freaking amazing, I've been drowning in Luke and loving it this Advent.

"Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word."

.true love.

I'm in it.

With this face right here (as you will soon be too- press play!):

He does that head bobbing thing IMMEDIATELY anytime that song comes on. Seriously. Omg. The cuteness.

Over my recent visit home, Mary and I were discussing our incredibly special and beautiful mentorship/friendship, and remembering how it started when she was 18 and I was 14.

Bet she didn't know that when she "adopted" little freshman -in-high-school-me, pouring all her love and prayers into lots of coffee dates, sleepovers, Bible studies and encouragement letters...

that someday I would be plotting how to steal her son and take him back to Wheaton with me. Mwahaha.

(Maryyy, I TOLD you that God TOLD me that you and Wolf are supposed to just MOVE HERE. Reallllyyyy. So then I won't HAVE to steal any babies, okkkk?? Ok great thank you. See you soon.)

See? Rex clearly loves the idea.

Your hands...

I first heard this song a few months ago and have listened to it over and over again. Seeing the sincerity on the singer/song-writer's face as she sings it herself in this video made it even more meaningful for me...

How I Really Spent The Last Six Months...

(I am so enjoying having a fast enough internet connection to finally post these...)

Here's a couple glimpses into what my HNGR experience really looked like on a daily basis...

It's definitely NOT all angst :-)

(Videos including me actually dance partying were very intentionally left unposted...)

Human Needs Global Resources Covenant, 2009

As fellow travelers on this journey, we commit to this covenant before God. Lord, in Your mercy, hear these our prayers:

When confronted with scarcity, need, and inadequacy, may we be nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation. Abundance overflows from Your table, sustaining all who come in faith. Father, help us.

When monotony blurs our vision and dulls our senses, may we encounter others as Christ did, through intentional presence in daily life, submitting as clay to be formed into vessels filled with the Spirit. Christ, guide us.

When wounded by the fractured condition of Your people, may we be united by Your Lordship in faith, hope, and love; seeing, as through the facets of a diamond, the beautiful spectrum of Your light reflected onto Your holy Church joined in praise. Spirit, empower us.

When all Creation groans, afflicted by injustice and driven to despair, may the promise of redemption root us in the hope of Your Kingdom: "Behold, I am making all things new!"

Holy Trinity, send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve You with gladness and singleness of heart.

Amen.
